OWH Sweet Summertime Challenge

Operation Write Home Stars and Stamps blog is having a Sweet Summertime card challenge.  Here is my card for the challenge. Flowers and Birds say summer to me.  I am enjoying both in my front yard garden!

The DSP is from K&Company Susan Winget.  The bird image is from Heatwarming Vintage, the cardstock is from Creative Memories, and the heart stamp is Stampin'Up! BFF, and sentiment is Stampin'Up! Teeny Tiny Wishes.  Pearls are from Creative Charms.

Hope you are enjoying the summery weather.  It is going to be 78 degrees today here in Denver.

OWH Stars and Stamps Midweek Throwdown Challenge

Buttons, Bows, Brown and Turquoise
The challenge for this week is brown and turquoise.  I created the sample card for it and added buttons and a bow.  The buttons on the card are stamped ones and die cut ones.  I love the brown and turquoise color combination.  Of course I had to give it a vintage look. I used OWH Sketch #102 as my starting point.

You could easily create this look using pattern paper circles too.  The stamps sets used from Stampin'Up! are Button Button, Creative Elements, and Teeny Tiny Wishes.  Paper used are Kraft, Creative Memories White, Mediterranean, Stampin'Up! Early Expresso.  Ink used was Chocolate Chip for the buttons and Tim Holtz Distressed Ink Vintage Photo for the distressing.  The ribbon was from a bunch of scrap ribbon I bought at Hobby Lobby.  I used the new Tim Holtz Distressed markers in Vintage Photo for the stitching.

I hope OWH gets enough general type cards this time so they can ship a whole box of cards rather than an envelope!  Keep creating and mail those cards in!  Thanks for stopping by.

Grandma Ruscio's Egg and Sausage Easter Pie

This pie is a traditional Easter dish that my grandmother used to cook every Easter.  This year I decided to make it again.  The original recipe I had called for a 9x13 pan of this and 24 eggs!  I cut it in half and used an 8x8 pan.  I also referenced my "Preserving Our Italian Heritage" cookbook published by the Sons of Italy Florida Foundation.  In that cookbook it calls this recipe "Pizza Ripieno or Pizza Rustica." Here's what I came up with:

EGG and SAUSAGE PIE
Use a prepared pizza crust dough and line an 8x8 metal baking pan with the crust.
Save some crust for a lattice topping.
For the filling use:
1 Lb Italian Sausage browned, cooked and sliced, layered into the pan
3 hard boiled eggs, peeled and sliced, layered into the pan
8 eggs beaten with 1 cup of Romano Cheese
1 lb ricotta cheese mixed with the beaten egg and Romano mixture
Add pepper and parsley to taste and pour over the sliced sausage and layered hard boiled eggs.
Make a lattice crust with pizza dough and apply to the top of the pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the egg mixture comes out clean.
Allow the pie to cool.  Slice and serve.  Refrigerate and serve cold for snacks.

Here's the result:

OWH Thinking of You Challenge

Operation Write Home (OWH) Stars and Stamps is having a Thinking of You challenge.  In response to one of our troops asking for "brown" cards I created this steampunk "brown" card.
The card base is Stampin'Up! Crumb Cake.  The background is Tim Holtz Kraft Resist paper with Broken China Distress Stain.  The top set of stamps are "Time" from Stampington&Co.  The clock and sentiment are from the Operation Write Home Hero Arts set.  I inked the edges of the card with Antique Linen Distressed Ink.  The brad is from Oriental Trading Company.

Here is another "brown" card I made for Operation Write Home.
The background is stamped with Adirondak Paint Dabber in brown using the Stampin'Up! Belle Toile stamp (retired) and a Glitz stamp for the script.  The flowers are from Creative Memories new Power Pallet called Divine.  Ribbon is Stampin'Up! Very Vanilla as is the cardstock.  Sentiment is from Hero Arts Operation Write Home set.  Bling is from Creative Charms.

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 Day 10

The last tag was easy!  We stamped our image with Distressed Ink and coated the entire image with Rock Candy Stickles.  It gave the tag a beautiful glitter sparkle that does not come off on your hands.  Unfortunatey, the glitter does not show up in the picture.  Here is my tag.
That ends the Tim Holtz Tag Show!  Back to making cards for Operation Write Home.

Tim Holtz Chreative Chemistry 101 Day 9

Almost done with class!  Today was about Perfect Pearls.  Tag 1 was supposed to be a re-inker and Perfect Pearl Powder mix to mist.  I didn't have the re-inkers but I did have some Perfect Pearls Mist.  so I used them to mist my TAG 1.  Tag 2 you stamped and then used the Perfect Pearls Powder over the stamped image.  Tag 3 was a splatter distress using Distressed Ink and Perfect Pearls Powder.  The photo does not do justice to the shimmer that the Perfect Pearls give to the Tags.  Here are my tags.
Back soon with one more tag for Day 10.

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry Day 8

Day 8 was all about Paint Dabbers and Crackle Paint.  For Tag 1 I stamped with Metallic Silver Paint Dabber onto Sticky-back Canvas.  I then coated the canvas with the Distressed Stains.  The silver metallic shines thru the stains nicely.  For Tag 2 I used Rock Candy (clear) crackle paint on 1/2 of the tag.  Then I inked with Distress ink and stamped over the crackle paint.  Tag 3 used Rock Candy (clear) on chipboard shapes and then stained with Distress Stains.  Here are my tags.
Back soon with Day 9 and 10.

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 Day 7

This day was one of my absolute favorites!  I love heat embossing and all three tags were heat embossed.  Tag 1 was a Nostalgic Batik Technique (I did not iron out the embossing enamel like you would on a batik but Tim did).  Tag 2 is called Rusted Enamel and I love how the surface looks so distressed.  I can't wait to use this on a card background.  Tag 3 used the new Distressed Embossing Powder.  After you heat emboss you brush your hand across the surface and crystals release leaving more of a distressed look on your tag.  Very cool!
Here are my Tags for Day 7

I'll be back with days 8-10 later.

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 Day 6

This lesson was about the new Distressed Markers.  Archiver's finally got some Distressed Markers in and I was able to do these tags.  The Distressed Markers are amazing.  You can stamp with them and re-wet them on the stamp and stamp again.  Their colors are vibrant.  I look forward to obtaining a few more colors.  Here are my tags.

This is my last post for the night.  I will try to finish Days 7-10 tomorrow.  I want to be in the running for the prizes!

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry Day 5

Day 5 was all about Distressed Stains.  Tag 1 was using Distressed Stains on Kraft Resist Paper.  Tag 2 was stamping with stains using the white "Picket Fence" stain (which is really more like paint).  Tag 3 was a marbled stain technique again using Picket Fence for the marbling effect.  Here are my tags.

I'll be back soon with Days 6-10.

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 Day 4

Day4 was a discussion of re-inkers and how to care for your ink pads.  Interesting to learn that storing ink pads upside down is not necessary.  The media used is suspended in the pad and doesn't really move up or down depending on how they are stored!  We really are getting a lot of technical information in this class.  I was only able to do 2 of 3 tags because the third tag was create your own custom inkpad.  I didn't have the inkpad material and didn't think it worth my while to get it.  I also didn't have any re-inkers for the first tag so "ad-libbed" and pushed my distressed ink pads onto my craft sheet and used a paintbrush to watercolor the tag.
The second tag was misting with re-inkers.  I used Perfect Pearls Mists instead and a Pink Paislee misting mask.  Here they are.

I'll be back with Days 5-10 later!

Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 Day 3

I finally got some glossy paper to finish up Day 3 tags.  You can still register for the Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 101 anytime, go HERE to find out how.  The videos and instruction sheets will be there forever and available anytime if you sign up.  The techniques for day 3 involved using Alcohol Ink and Archival Ink.  Here are my results.
Tag 1 used the Alcohol inks and I love how it turned out.  It shimmers in the light.  Tag 2 used various colored archival inks and then a black archival ink on top. I had a lot of trouble with the stamp I used and salvaged the tag because I don't have time to do it over.  The ink smeared in the bottom and didn't print on top.  Glossy paper is hard to stamp on.  The Third tag involves stamping on an embossing folder and having it transfer to your tag.  Interesting technique, it does require an embossing folder with a lot of open space.

Back with Days 4-10 later!
